Math Delights

Materials: Deck of cards (excluding 10, J, Q, and K), pencil and paper

Level A

1. Shuffle the 39 cards.
2. Deal 5 cards to each player.
3. Pick 3 cards that sum to a number near 20.
4. Compute your score. Your score is the absolute difference between your total and the number 20.
5. Repeat the game 7 times and add up all your scores.
6. Compare your total score with those of the other players.
7. The lowest total score wins.

Level B

1. Shuffle the cards.
2. Deal 9 cards to each player.
3. Pick 6 cards.
4. Make two 2-digit numbers from any four of your cards, e.g., with the cards 3 4, 5, and 6 you can create the numbers 34 and 65, or 35 and 46.
5. Arrange the numbers and add them up so that their sum is 100 or close to it.
6. Compute your score. Your score is the absolute difference between your total and the number 20.
7. Repeat the game 7 times and add up all your scores.
8. Compare your total score with those of the other players.
9. The lowest total score wins.
